Preached in the College Chapel extemporaneously. I could better extemporize anywhere else than in the College Chapel. I know the audience so well, individually and in peculiar ways – have peculiar associations with particular individuals on whom my eye falls: and they have, in consequence of discipline and otherwise, their dislikes towards me, &c. Thus the audience in College Chapel is not well suited to the officer who administers discipline (for example, the President) for experiments in extemporizing. With the Chaplain, who is only a pastor, preacher, and friend, it would be different.
